Basically, rummy is a ‘draw and discard’ card game, played with 3 decks of cards, with three printed jokers, where each player is dealt 13 cards. It is an easy game, once you familiarize yourself with the rules. It doesn’t take much time for you to understand and remember the rules, however, one needs to keep practicing to master the game.
How To Begin?
Let’s say, three people are playing the game. One is the dealer, who will shuffle the cards and deals 13 cards each including himself. He will start with the opponent next to him and will deal with himself at least. 13 cards are not dealt all together but one by one. It will go 1 card to the first opponent, one card to the next, and finally one card the dealer will deal himself. Then, it’s the same for cards 2, 3, and so on. Once 13 cards are dealt, the dealer will open the first card from the deck and the joker gets picked by him. However, when you are playing online or on a rummy app, this step gets avoided as the computer deals your round. But, during each game, a dealer is appointed. This is done to keep a system in place. In the game of rummy, the opponent next to the dealer gets to go first.
Arrangement Of The Cards
Once your cards are dealt, arrange them in sets and sequences. Don’t be overwhelmed, we will take it step by step. So, in the game, always remember, the joker is the most important card, the more the jokers the better. In a game of rummy, there are both printed jokers and the joker the dealer picks. Sometimes, it so happens that he picks the printed joker, then the game goes on for longer because the number of jokers available goes down.
Now since that’s sorted let’s move on. So, in a game of rummy, to win, you will need a pure sequence, a pure/impure sequence, then you can move on to sets. A pure sequence is made using the same color and symbol cards in order. For instance, Diamonds K-Q-J. The applicable sequence of rummy can be from A to K. A can be put together with 2 and 3 or with K and Q to form a sequence.
So we mentioned earlier that you must have a pure and impure sequence. In some cases, it is a 3-card sequence, but in some cases, it is compulsory that you have a 4-card sequence too. It can be for either pure or impure. Therefore, check the rules of the website where you are playing before you proceed.
An impure sequence can be put forward with the help of a joker. Let’s say, the joker picked by the dealer is 6 of spades. That means any 6 will be considered to be the joker, along with the printed joker. So, if you have a 2-card or a 3-card sequence, you can attach a joker to it to form the complete sequence. But, you still have 6 more cards. Here, you can opt for sets.
Sets are basically cards of the same number, but they can be of different colours and symbols. For instance, it can be a set of diamond K, spade K, and hearts K. However, a set is only valid after you have your two sequences in place.
Talking about sequence, another important thing you ought to remember in London. London is rare to find but is considered to be a pure sequence. London is three cards of the same symbol and colour. For instance, 3 6s of hearts form London.
Finally, let’s say you have a pure and impure sequence along with a set in place, which means you still have three more cards left with you. While you are declaring, you close one unwanted card. So, it leaves you with two cards. You can either fit them in the sequence or form a set of 4 cards.
The Beginning Of The Game
Once the cards are dealt, the dealer places an open card. The opponent seated next to him can choose to pick that card or the one from the closed deck. And once he will pick his card, he will discard the unwanted one. And that’s how the game proceeds.
Quick Tips To Help You With The Game
- Arrange your cards properly at the beginning of the game. You can put your jokers on the left and keep the cards you want to discard on the right. It will help save your time during the game and avoid any confusion.
- Always keep an eye on what your opponent picks and discards, and discard your cards accordingly.
- Jokers are very important in a game of rummy, using them wisely can turn your game around. You can also use jokers to form a natural sequence. For instance, 6 is the joker, you have spade 4 and 5, so if you have a spade 6, even though it’s a joker, you can easily form a natural sequence and in later in the game suppose you find a spade 3, you can then form a sequence with it and use 6 as a joker with some other card.
- In the beginning, when you think you are ready to declare, check multiple times to be safe.
- Always discard high-value cards sooner than later if they are not of any use in the game as they can increase your score and spoil the game for you.
- Finally, have fun while playing the game.

Rummy is a game of Drawing and Discarding cards until one player forms the requisite hand of cards (melds of either, Sequences of cards belonging to the same suit, or, Sets) and Declares his/ her hand.
Dealer Button: The Rummy card game begins with deciding the Dealer. This happens automatically in the game as all the players are dealt a card each and the player who receives the highest card gets to go first. Turn then moves clockwise around the table.
However, if you're joining a room where a game is already in progress Deal will be awarded to the winner of the previous game and turn will rotate clockwise.
The Deal: The next step is distribution of cards to the players. In a 2 player game = 13 cards each, 3 player game= 10 cards each, 4 player game= 7 cards each are dealt (each player's cards are visible only to them). After this the next card is opened and kept face-up on the table and forms the discard pile of cards. The rest of the deck is kept next to it and forms the closed deck. The Joker is kept face up underneath the closed deck.
Gameplay: The player who is the Dealer will go first and may either pick the face-up card from the discard pile or draw a card from the closed deck. Turn will then pass on to the player sitting next to the Dealer in a clockwise manner and so on and so forth. This will continue to happen till a player creates a valid hand (with melds of Sequences of cards belonging to the same suit or Sets) and Declares it. As soon as a player Declares their hand the game comes to an end and the other players are required to Meld their cards in the best possible order and Declare their hands too. The winner is awarded Chips/Points on the basis of incomplete melds of the other players.
