The 12th season of the Indian Premier League starts on Saturday.

Cricket fans the world over will be eagerly anticipating the first ball to be bowled in the match between current champions Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The IPL is the biggest — and brashest — T20 cricket league in the world, and this season promises to be just as explosive as those in the past.

The Super Kings came back from the wilderness to win the title again last season, but a lot has changed since the end of the last campaign, and it will be fascinating to see who takes the bigprize this time around.

I’m going to take a look at the chances of all the teams in the IPL this season and see where the value is at one of the topcricket betting sites.

The first match this Saturday kicks off two months of what promises to be electrifying cricket played in front of some of the most passionate fans in the world.

Now that the player auction has been held and the dust has settled, we can take a look at the latest odds for the winner of this season’s IPL. These are all courtesy of Betway.

As you can immediately see, once again, IPL 12 will be just as keenly contested as in previous seasons with the Sunrisers fancied just slightly over the reigning champions.

But anything can happen in the IPL, so it’s not inconceivable that Rajasthan, Delhi, or even the Kings XI could come away with the title.

With such an open race, even the favorites are attractively priced, but I’m going to see who has the best chance of winning the trophy this season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The betting market for the outright winner of IPL 12 is very tight, but the Sunrisers are favorites, and I think there is an excellent chance that the Hyderabad side will be making the playoffsat the end of the season.

With batting power prized above all else in the IPL, it is striking that the Sunrisers’ bowling talent has been a big reason for its success. Spinner Rashid Khan and paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumarwill end a lot of innings this season and give the Sunrisers’ batsmen a great chance of winning games.

The return of David Warner after suspension is a huge boost, and with the addition of England wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow, there will be some explosive batting in the Hyderabad squad thisseason.

Alongside having possibly my favorite name in the IPL, the Knight Riders go into this season with a great chance of winning the competition for the first time since 2014. The balance in the sidewith a top and middle order packed with experience, skill, and power should see Kolkata as certainties for the playoffs.

English player Joe Denly has been brought in to bolster the batting side of things, but there is a good group of young Indians from the U19 squad that adds an extra source of youth anddetermination to an already talented setup.

The Knight Riders are unlikely to be as affected by the end-of-season overseas players’ exodus as well so has a very good chance of going all the way.

Chennai Super Kings

With virtually every side capable of making the playoffs, it’s difficult to pick out definites when it comes to the IPL, but Chennai will surely follow up its third title with another playoffappearance in May.

It felt like the Super Kings had something to prove last season after sitting out a year due to suspension, and it will now be a question of whether the squad feels as if the job is done orwhether it can haul itself up to repeat the trick again this year.

Not much has changed on the personnel front with an ageing team still looking to MS Dhoni to lead it to glory. South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi showed his talent last year, and if he canrepeat that form, the Super Kings will be in with a chance again.

A change of name, but will Delhi experience the same kinds of problems as in the past? The Daredevils — as they were known last year — finished dead last, but there are hopes that the big hittersat the top of the order will prove the difference this time around.

It is this power that will be key to any chance of success for Delhi, and the addition of New Zealander Colin Munro could make it one of the surprise packages of this year’s tournament. Withwrist spinner Sandeep Lamichhane proving to be one of the best in the league at finishing off opponents, I think Delhi could be in with a chance of the playoffs.

Although Kings XI has repeatedly shown promise, it has never won the IPL and has only made it to the playoffs on two occasions — beaten finalists in 2014 being its best ever season. But thePunjab team is another squad who I think could upset a few of the major players over the next few months.

The batting of KL Rahul will be a highlight again, but the form of the “Universe Boss,” Chris Gayle, in the recent one day internationals for West Indies against England was incredible — and ifthe 39-year-old can raise himself one more time in the IPL, then Kings XI could cause some problems for opposing bowlers.

Mumbai Indians

It seems a little unfair to cast Mumbai as a team without hope, and in truth, the IPL is so tight that it has as good a chance as any to succeed, but I can’t see it making it to the playoff partof the season in 2019.

Adding Quinton de Kock to the squad is a bit of a gamble, as his displays for Bangalore last year were not impressive. His form for the South African national side has been better in themeantime, but I feel it is a lot to ask for his batting to power the Indians to glory.

Mumbai is one of the big sides in the IPL, winning the trophy on three occasions, but I can see last season’s disappointment repeating again this year.

The Royals made the playoffs last season before being dumped out at the first opportunity, and this season looks like it will be much more of a struggle. Steve Smith is back from suspension, buthis injury makes it possible that he may not have much influence on Rajasthan’s performance this year.

Rajasthan really felt the absence of its overseas talent at the tail end of last season, and that will only be heightened this time around as the likes of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, and JofraArcher will all likely miss the last few games due to England’s preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup.

A lot rides on how the Royals start the season, but a playoff place looks beyond this squad.

A beaten finalist three times in eleven seasons, there is an annual feeling of impending disappointment around this side. Bangalore at some point will win an IPL, but it will not be this season, even with the batting talent of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers at its disposal. The problem lies in the lack of power behind those two big hitters.

There is not much squad depth at Bangalore, and even with what is expected to be a pitch more conducive to its batting strengths, it does not seem as though these perennial underachievers willturn things around this year.

The Indian Premier League is tough to call in any season, but with Chennai returning last season to take the crown, its players may feel as though that was enough of a statement and may not havethe same fight for IPL 12.

Hyderabad is the early favorite, but I feel as though Kolkata’s incredible home form can push them to the playoffs and then on to the title.

Final Words

Whatever happens in this 12th year of the Indian Premier League, one thing that is guaranteed will be the passion of the crowds. The excitement and noise generated from the stands makeit like no other T20 competition in the world — and a million miles away from the traditional picture of this supposedly genteel sport.

The drama of the IPL is something to be experienced, and cricket fans are in for a treat over the next few months as the new season gets underway.
